Local auditions are scheduled at Berwick Town Hall at 9:00AM on April 9 with possible callbacks on April 10. The 2011 schedule includes "Ten Nights in a Barroom," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Singin' In the Rain," and "The 39 Steps". </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The only items necessary are water, headshot, resume, and patience. Katie Rodgers is the director of the program. According to Rodgers, “The children’s 2010 summer play will be an original show called "The World's a Stage", using American music from the Tin Pan Alley era (Gershwin, Foster, Joplin, Berlin). The campers will have the chance to insert their own personalities and ideas into the show, and will, as always, help paint and build their sets and design and create their own costumes.” This is Rodgers’ 7th summer working with the Hackmatack Children's Theater Camp, and second year as director. She said, “Campers make lifelong friends, enjoy the beautiful grounds, and grow as performers and as children while they strengthen their confidence and self-esteem. While watching the campers perform and realize their talents and strengths is always rewarding, what I truly look forward to the most each summer is watching them make friends, laugh, work together, and include their unique creativity in everything they do.”<br /><br />Registration for Children’s Camp is limited to 30 children, ages 7 to 13. NEWS RELEASE OF THE MONTH:</div><div><br />New Hampshire magician BJ Hickman remembers watching Japanese magician Shimada on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. He was on Carson’s show four times. Shimada has earned the prestige of being the most awarded and celebrated magician in the history of magic. "He has always been one of my favorites," according to Hickman. "Shimada has performed on hundreds of TV shows, in Las Vegas, and all over the world." </div><br /><div>The International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.) honored Shimada at their annual convention this year. Hickman was on the same bill.</div><div><br />"It was such an honor to meet Shimada and spend some time talking with him," Hickman said. "He’s a star in magic." Shimada’s publicist wrote, "With elegance, grace and undeniable mystery, Shimada is captivating the moment he steps on stage. The sheer intensity of his eyes hypnotizes the audience as he performs feat after feat of flawless magic with doves and silks, cards and candles. Shimada is also famous for his spectacular Dragon Act."</div><div><br />Hickman is a 40 year member of the I.B.M. and spoke at this year’s annual convention in Nashville recently. Hickman shared the best of his magic routines and marketing strategies with I.B.M attendees. </div><div><br />The I.B.M. is the world’s largest organization for magicians and for people interested in the magical arts with nearly 12,000 members worldwide in over 300 local chapters in 73 countries. It’s going to be fun.”<br /><br />Hickman was first booked by the Chamber in 1975 for shows during the Downtown Dover Summer Festival. He has also performed at several of Dover’s Apple Harvest Days, and every Cochecho Arts Festival.<br /><br />“It is always a pleasure performing here in Dover,” according to the long-time Dover resident and Manchester native. “Last year a child commented that their grandparents remembered enjoying my show when they were young. I can’t think of a better way to make a living!”<br /><br />The show is scheduled for 10:30, Tuesday, August 4 on stage at the Rotary Arts Pavilion, Henry Law Park in Dover (NH).<br /><br />Magician BJ Hickman entertains family audiences primarily throughout New England and occasionally elsewhere. It was a "Professional Performers Workshop." About a dozen magicians from around the country gathered to exchange ideas and spend some time with celebrity guest lecturers.<br /></div><div></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333145782299659298" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 220px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_m6M1oeRzEVw/SgMj1TFYDCI/AAAAAAAAAC4/AYbN4NVJG6w/s320/Dom+DeLuise+-+BJ+Hickman.jpg" border="0" /><br /><div>Magician BJ Hickman with actor/comedian Dom DeLuise in 1997, a year after Hickman left broadcasting to go into business for himself.</div><div> </div><div>I had a chance to talk with Dom DeLuise at some length during the workshop (He loved magic and one of his characters was that of a bumbling magician). He told me that it was important in his career to diversify. He mentioned that he wasn't in any movies that year, but that he was doing all right. He talked about diversification, creativity, and a good business sense. The show will be at Nashua Lodge of Elks, 120 Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua. This will be a full hour family magic show with fun magic, audience participation, and will include magic instruction so children will be able to learn a few tricks. The economy is as sluggish as many of us have ever seen it. A local magician has “conjured up” a system to stay profitable while also understanding the dilemma of the paying public. Whellah! He wrote a booklet, “The Show Must Go On! 25 Ways to make it Happen.” This “system” can also be used in<br />other business situations where creativity is necessary.<br /><br />When magician BJ Hickman decided to take his hobby of magic full time a dozen years ago, his marketing initiative composed a system for booking shows. He wanted to be busy. One of his concerns, however was, “What if a worthy non-profit or charitable organization wanted a magic show or speaking presentation? Who pays? Who doesn’t? Where do I draw the line? How do I stay profitable and also respond to the communities’ needs and give back?” Occasionally, and more often recently, there would be an organization decision maker who realized the value of his services but just didn’t have the budget. Previously, some of these organizations would not have thought twice about the price or where the money was going to come from. Hickman has had to use his “bag of tricks” usually reserved for the non-profits to help close the sale for those who previously would have had the budget.<br /><br />Some of the tactics in the booklet are obvious to any casual advertising observer, “No Money down,” “3 easy payments,” and other credit arrangements. Other ideas Hickman has included would never have been traditionally thought of to finance something, especially a magic show. He came up with the list after interviewing several other performing artists and speakers in various parts of the country, financing research, and a history of having tried many creative tactics to close the sale from his business experience performing magic shows and previously in broadcasting.<br /><br />Fortunately for business, discounting is not one of the answers. Reducing a fee for a reduction of services, however, is one of the possibilities. For example, there might be a reduction in the fee if the buyer wouldn’t mind providing an appropriate, approved, sound system. That would mean less time for the performer as far as set-up and break-down, less to travel with, etc. Other ideas written up in the booklet include: • bartering • combining of audiences• being flexible with date selection to allow for block booking to practically eliminate the cost of travel• making available more show or program options • encouraging advance booking to secure fees• percentage plans• creative suggestions to guarantee ticket sales• sponsorship options, and • help marketing a program that is open to the public.<br /><br />The booklet, “The Show Must Go On, 25 Ways to make it Happen,” is available to those prospects who acknowledge that the show is worth it, but they just can’t swing it. NEWS RELEASE OF THE MONTH:<br /><br />Recycling MagicMagic Show Goes Green(For Immediate Release)(PHOTO AVAILABLE – suggested caption: BJ Hickman poses in front of bales of Recyclables following one of his Magic of Recycling programs.)<br /><br />Magician BJ Hickman has been entertaining audiences resembling a sea of green recently and it has nothing to do with Ireland or St. Patrick’s Day. The children wear green to show their support and enthusiasm about recycling and improving our environment. Waste Management and Recycle America have combined efforts with magician BJ Hickman to bring attention to the benefits of recycling. The efforts have produced a “magic show” school assembly program for elementary school age children throughout the local area. This winter, children at Strafford County (NH) YMCA, Lamprey River Elementary School in Raymond, William Allen, McClelland, and St. Elizabeth Seton schools in Rochester (NH), and Springfield (MA) Museum have been treated to the program.<br /><br />In the program, sponsored by Waste Management and brought to the schools at no charge, BJ Hickman provides a humorous, audience participation magic show using props that were made from recycled materials. BJ Hickman encourages children to think about what can be recycled or reused, and the benefits of recycling. According to Hickman, “I think the children have a few laughs and go away with a new awareness of the importance of recycling. So far, the program has been very well received.”<br /><br />Waste Management District Manager Alan Davis said, “We work with municipalities, schools, commercial and industrial customers to help implement recycling programs to meet environmental goals. Recycling programs depend on strong educational campaigns. BJ Hickman’s Magic of Recycling raises awareness about recycling and encourages children to participate at their schools and households.”<br /><br />Magician BJ Hickman entertains family audiences primarily throughout New England. The success of three instructional videotapes has earned him invitations to lecture at conferences and conventions for colleagues. In recent years, BJ has taken his experience to the domain of speaking for various groups. In his humorous keynote presentation or workshop, "PediaTRICKS.com," he instructs children's health care professionals about keeping patients comfortable and relaxed in the doctor’s office.
